Liskeard Central Kerry Cassidy
Kerry Cassidy

I’m delighted to have been selected to stand for the Labour Party for the upcoming Cornwall County Council elections in Liskeard Central in May 2021.

I love Liskeard. It shaped me in to the person I am now and I want to help the town continue to grow and be the best it can be.
I grew up in Rilla Mill, not Liskeard, but Liskeard was our go to town for most things. I have fond memories of roller discos and birthday parties at Lux Park, buying school shoes at Gilberts, picking the best rubber and pencil case from Occasions, getting a flaky sausage roll and a pink iced bun from Blakes as a treat. Our weekly shopping trips were to Liskeard and we would pass the time waiting for the bus home stroking the cows in the cattle market and having something to eat in the Market Cafe when we could afford it. Riding through the streets on the backs of trailers and milk floats during the carnival and saving all my pocket money for the Lions teddy tombola at St Matthew’s Fair. Like many from the villages, my weekly school swimming lessons were via a dusty old coach to the then blue and green drippy plastic roofed pool. My grandparents had a picture of me in a beautiful baby contest held in the public hall in around 1982 on their wall for decades, along with cuttings of all family members from the Cornish Times. Memories made in Liskeard have shaped not only my life but the lives of everyone around me, and I want to ensure future generations are able to make the same memories and I want to give back to the community by becoming a councillor.
A lot of what shaped my childhood has now gone, we can’t get it all back but we can fight to keep what we have. We need councillors that will support our existing businesses and encourage new ones to town, to create jobs and create reasons to come here. We need to re-establish Liskeard in the heart of our rural community by encouraging the agri-hub to be built so farmers, small holders and producers don’t have to drive miles to access market services, by campaigning to bring Lux Park under council control again, by supporting the local sports clubs to help them continue to thrive, by supporting events such as the Ploughman’s Festival, Lions Pantomime, Community Fair and St Matthew’s Fair. As a councillor I pledge to put Liskeard first, and plan to volunteer time with a different local organisation or event each month to help understand their needs and use my position to help raise their profile and understand their needs.
